By ErrorNest Published Updated 3 min read
A Steam game that will not launch is usually damaged files, an old graphics driver or a missing component. Start with verifying game files, then work through the rest.

A Steam game that flashes “Running” and then closes, or never starts at all, is usually down to damaged game files, an outdated graphics driver, a missing runtime component or software that interferes with the game. These fixes start with the quickest and least disruptive.

Quick fix: Fully exit and reopen Steam, then verify the integrity of the game files (step 2). This repairs missing or corrupted files without reinstalling.

What stops a Steam game from launching

  • Missing or corrupted game files, often after an interrupted update.
  • An outdated graphics driver or an outdated Windows build.
  • Missing Visual C++ or DirectX components the game needs.
  • Antivirus or firewall software blocking the game.
  • Overlays from Steam, Discord or graphics software that conflict with the game.
  • Incorrect launch options or a damaged Steam download cache.

1. Restart Steam and the PC

In Steam choose Steam > Exit so the client closes completely, then reopen it and try the game again. If it still fails, restart Windows and try once more.

2. Verify the game files

In your Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties > Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Steam checks the files and downloads anything that is missing or damaged. This can take several minutes for large games.

3. Update your graphics driver and Windows

Install the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, or from your PC maker for laptops, and run Windows Update. Restart afterwards. Many launch crashes disappear with a current driver.

4. Run Steam as administrator

Close Steam, right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator, then launch the game. If it works, a permissions problem was the cause.

5. Install the game’s required components

Many Steam games ship their own installers for Visual C++ and DirectX. In your Library, right-click the game and choose Manage > Browse local files, open the _CommonRedist folder if there is one, and run the installers inside it. Restart the PC afterwards.

6. Check security software and overlays

Temporarily check whether your antivirus has blocked or quarantined the game. If so, restore the file and add the game’s folder as an exception, but only if you trust the game. Also turn off overlays one at a time to test: in Steam open Settings > In Game and clear Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game, then check Discord and any graphics-card overlay.

7. Clear the download cache and launch options

In Steam open Settings > Downloads and select Clear Download Cache. You will need to sign in again. Then right-click the game, open Properties > General, and clear the Launch Options box in case a custom option is breaking the start.

8. Reinstall the game

Before you reinstall: check that the game supports Steam Cloud saves, or copy its save folder, so you do not lose progress. Many games store saves outside the install folder, but not all do.

Right-click the game, choose Manage > Uninstall, restart, and install it again from your Library.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the game launch and then close immediately?

This usually points to corrupted files, a driver problem or a missing component. Steps 2, 3 and 5 are the most likely fixes.

Does verifying game files delete my saves?

No. Verification only replaces missing or changed game files. Keep a copy of saves if the game stores them locally and you are worried.

Does my PC meet the game’s requirements?

Check the system requirements on the game’s Steam store page. A PC below the minimum can fail to launch even when everything else is correct.

When to contact support

If the game still will not start, look up the game’s Steam community hub for known issues, or contact the game’s developer through its store page. For problems with Steam itself, use the official Steam support site. If other programs also crash, see how to fix programs that crash on Windows.
