How to Fix the Windows 11 Taskbar Not Showing or Not Working

On this page
A Windows 11 taskbar that has vanished, shows a blank strip or ignores clicks is almost always a stuck Windows Explorer process or a setting such as auto-hide, not a deeper fault. Most people fix it within the first two steps. The rest are here in case it keeps coming back.
Quick fix: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, right-click it and choose Restart. The taskbar disappears for a moment and reloads.
What causes the taskbar to disappear or freeze
- The Windows Explorer process, which draws the taskbar, has hung.
- The taskbar is set to hide automatically.
- A display change, such as connecting or removing a monitor.
- A recent Windows update or a third-party customisation tool.
- Damaged system files or a damaged user profile.

1. Restart Windows Explorer
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Task Manager opens as a small window, select More details. On the Processes tab, scroll to Windows Explorer, right-click it and choose Restart. If it is not in the list, select Run new task, type explorer.exe and press Enter.
2. Check whether the taskbar is set to auto-hide
Right-click an empty part of the desktop, choose Personalize, then Taskbar, and expand Taskbar behaviors. If Automatically hide the taskbar is ticked, clear it, or move the mouse to the bottom edge of the screen to show it.
3. Check your displays
If the problem began after connecting a monitor or TV, press Win + P and pick PC screen only to test. With several monitors, the taskbar may be on a screen that is off. In Taskbar behaviors, make sure Show my taskbar on all displays is ticked if you want it everywhere.
4. Restart or sign out
If Task Manager opens but Explorer will not restart, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, choose Sign out, and sign back in. A full restart also clears most temporary faults.
5. Repair system files
Right-click the Start button, choose Terminal (Admin) and run these two commands in order. Each can take a few minutes.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannowRestart when both finish.

6. Remove a recent update
If the taskbar broke right after an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, select the most recent update and choose Uninstall. If Windows Update is stuck instead, see how to fix Windows Update stuck on checking for updates.
7. Test with a new user account
Go to Settings > Accounts > Other users and add a new local account. Sign in to it. If the taskbar works there, your original profile is damaged. Move your files to the new account.
8. Use System Restore
Search the Start menu for Create a restore point, choose System Restore, and pick a restore point from before the problem began. This does not delete your documents but does remove programs installed after that date.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the taskbar only vanish in full-screen apps?
That is normal behaviour for video players and games. If it stays hidden after you leave full screen, restart Explorer as in step 1.
Is the taskbar problem caused by a virus?
Rarely. Run a Windows Security scan if you also see other odd behaviour, but a stuck Explorer process is far more common.
When to contact support
If the taskbar fails again after every fix and a new user account shows the same problem, contact Microsoft Support or your PC maker. For other Windows problems, see our Windows troubleshooting overview.
